ABOUT THE ARTIST
I was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania in 1939,
the fifth of seven children. I started drawing at the age of ten,
and was selected by my fourth grade teacher to participate in
a four year art program at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
I earned my Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education from Wichita
State University, and spent thirteen years teaching art in the
Wichita Public School System, with four years as Department Chair.
Teaching art led to a need to produce art, and my love of painting
was born.
In 1975 I established a state certified commercial art school.
I was also appointed by the Governor to serve as Commissioner
with the Kansas Arts Commission 1975 to 1979.
In my early years of painting, I practiced my craft in stolen
moments and hours sandwiched between the demands of job and family.
I retired from the work place in 1994, opened my own Gallery and
Frame Shop and finally my part time work, and first love became
my full time endeavor.
In 1996 I embarked upon an intense three year study of anatomy,
the drawings and paintings created during that period are available
at my web site. Over the past twelve years I have experienced
a steady loss of sight do to Glaucoma. To date I have lost eighty
five percent of my sight, however I am blessed to be able to continue
painting.
Although I have been painting since 1964, my most recent work,
“The Black Experience”
is my most comprehensive body of work that I have created to date.
This is a twenty painting series, oil on canvas which depicts
the African American experience in its full expression, from the
time of our ancestral Kings and Queens, through the atrocities
of slavery, up to present day.
Oil painting is my favorite medium, and my paintings can be found
in private collections across the United States and in Nigeria,
West Africa.
